코벤트리 대학교는 1843년에 코벤트리 디자인 대학교로 시작하여, 그 후에 코벤트리 예술 대학으로 바뀌었고, 현재 7개의 단과 대학을 갖추고 있습니다. 지금의 코벤트리 대학교가 된 것은 1992년부터 입니다. 역사적으로 볼 때에도 코벤트리 대학은 종합 대학교이지만, 디자인 대학이 중심적인 단과 대학인 것을 알 수 있을 것입니다.

코벤트리 도시는 영국에서 가장 안전한 도시 4위 안에 꼽힐 만큼 범죄율이 낮은데다가 생활비도 저렴해 한국 학생들에게 여러모로 유리합니다. 영국의 중심부에 위치 해, 기차를 이용할 경우 영국의 수도 런던에서는 1시간, 영국 제 2의 도시 버밍험에서는 25분 밖에 걸리지 않습니다. 4만평에 이르는 부지에 현대적 건물을 갖추고 있는 코벤트리 대학은 시내 중심에 위치하고 있어 학생들이 통학하기에 매우 편리합니다.

코벤트리 대학교는 전공과 관련한 꼭 필요한 전문 기술과 지식을 가르치는데 상당수의 교육 과정이 전문 기관이 인정하는 수업 요강을 따르고 있으며 Jaguar, BT, Ford, Nokia 등 굴지의 세계 기업들과 산학협력을 통해 인턴십 과정을 제공함으로써 취업 시 실무에서 바로 적용 가능하고 실용적인 학문과 기술을 배울 수 있는 기회를 가질 수 있습니다. 2004년에는 캐나다 국제 자동차 쇼에서 열린 자동차 디자인 대회에서 전체 우승과 Best Design School 분야의 우승을 했고, 세계 곳곳에서 자동차 디자이너로 졸업생들이 활동하고 있습니다. 유명 졸업생으로는 2005년 페라리 자동차 디자인에 입상한 데이비드 이마이가 있습니다.
